Policy Specialist Action area: Regional Regional action and global advocacy
Avash has been with ICIMOD since 2021 as a full-time employee and has been contributing to regional cooperation, and generating policy relevant evidence on environment related matters. He has a postgraduate degree in environmental sciences from Tongji University, China and a master’s degree in economics and finance from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, China. He has contributed to flagship publication like Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) Assessment Report, Water, ice, society, and ecosystems in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HI-WISE) report.
Avash has been an integral part of the team on engaging with the ministers of the eight regional members countries (RMCs) of ICIMOD. He has also contributed to the assessment reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and represented ICIMOD in multiple national and international forums.

How do you protect the pulse of the planet?
My work protects the pulse of the planet since regional cooperation is critically essential to protecting the global asset that is the HKH. This regional cooperation is facilitated through our work providing evidence through our monitoring and assessment of the current physical and socioeconomic dynamics of the region. This scientific evidence is an important resource for policymakers from where they can strategize their national poli cies on the basis of the most up-to-date information on climate change and other considerations.
What is your favorite part of the work you do at ICIMOD?
The multicultural and multidisciplinary setup working in climate-related, environmental and social science.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate to work to save the environment and bring justice and equity for the entire biosphere.
My qualifications
I hold Master’s degrees in both Environmental Management and Sustainable Development and International Finance. I have experience working in the climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, water resource management, education and private sectors within Nepal and outside.
