Intervention Manager - Rangeland & Wetlands Ecosystem and landscape restoration (SG2-AAD) Resilient mountain economies and landscapes (SG2)
Dr. Yi Shaoliang works as Intervention Manager for Rangelands under Action Area D (Resilient Landscapes) of ICIMOD. He has held this position since 2023 and previously served as Coordinator for the Landscape Conservation and Development Initiative for Far-Eastern Himalaya (HI-LIFE) and as Manager of the Regional Rangeland Programme (Phase III). Yi joined ICIMOD in 2007 after 30 years of working with Southwest Forestry University of China and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. From 2011–2023, he worked with Aga Khan Foundation, Afghanistan, managing land- and water-related projects.
Yi’s work has been published in Mountain Research and Development, World Ecology and Sustainable Development, Ecology and Society, and Ecosystem Services. He has also contributed to many ICIMOD publications on biodiversity, transboundary collaboration, and ecosystem management. He holds a PhD in ecology from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

How do you protect the pulse of the planet?
My work is focused on protecting the integrity of vital ecosystems in the mountain areas of China, Myanmar and India. I engage with a wide range of actors in the HKH region to promote environmental conservation and community development. In this way I help protect the pulse of the planet.
What is your favourite part of the work you do at ICIMOD?
What I enjoy most about ICIMOD is the open and multicultural environment.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about nature in general and I enjoy learning about the culture, history and cross-border dynamics of the HKH region.
My qualifications
I have over 30 years of experience in teaching, research and project management in the fields of forestry, forest fire ecology, human geography, rangeland management, pastoralism, land and water resources management, and biodiversity conservation. Besides ICIMOD, I have worked with Southwest Forestry University of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Aga Khan Foundation (Afghanistan), gathering rich knoweldge and experiences in the HKH region, from the Pamir Region to the Tibetan Plateau and Northwest Yunnan. I have authored or co-authored publications on pastoralism, rangeland management, yaks, ecosystem management, and treeline ecology.
