Message from the HUC Secretariat
Among all the sectors impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, higher education has been shaken to its core, but despite this our HUC community continues to thrive and stay connected through collaborative research and delivering quality trainings. We have enhanced virtual collaboration by embracing state-of-the-art digital technology, bridging the technological divide, and safeguarding digital inclusiveness across all regional member countries in the Hindu Kush Himalayas.
We mourn the untimely departure of Ranbeer Rawal, former Director of GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, who served as the HUC Steering Committee Member representing India. Our thoughts are with his family and colleagues, as well as with our fellows who have been impacted by the pandemic and political turmoil. We are deeply grateful for your continued engagement and are truly inspired by your proactiveness in building our resilience. The HUC community enters the new academic year 2021-2022 with perseverance, aspirations, and hope for a safer, greener, and more just world that we will build and sustain together.

HUC Disaster Risk Reduction TWG panel participates in international symposium in Bangkok
10 participants from 6 countries from the HUC network participated in the symposium on Disaster Resilience and Sustainable Development (DRSD) at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) from June 24-25 2021.

International Seminar on 'Ethnic fermented foods of the Himalayas with reference to Bhutan: Traditional to metagenomics'
The seminar held on 29 January 2021 acquainted students with the latest development in metagenomics and health, and promoted the benefits of ethnic fermented foods and beverages of the Himalayas. 64 participants, more than half of them female, from the College of Natural Resources (CNR), Royal University of Bhutan attended the seminar.

'Hydro-Himalaya' project partnership wins NORAD funding for six years
We were instrumental in securing the NORHED-II funding for the Hydro-Himalaya project which started in mid-2021. This collaborative project aims to strengthen research-based education, and produce a better-qualified workforce for the Hindu Kush Himalaya.

HUC TransHimalayan Environmental Humanities TWG launches book with Routledge
The publication marks the first formal introduction of environmental humanities to the Himalayan region and features case studies from Bhutan, Assam, Sikkim, Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sino-Indian borderlands. We congratulate all the contributing authors and editors for this achievement and thank them for their research and hard work.

Realizing the need for and importance of stifling through a good video management software, especially during the pandemic, we have onboarded Panopto to ease video management for the HUC network. Stay tuned while we work towards expanding this feature to a wider network in the HKH!

HUC fellow receives Harvard-Yenching fellowship
We would like to congratulate Charisma Lepcha, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, Sikkim University on receiving the prestigious Harvard-Yenching fellowship for 2021-22. She is an HUC SDC Focus Grantee and also a member of the HUC Trans-Himalayan Environmental Humanities Thematic Working Group.

Fieldwork during the pandemic
The Cryosphere and Society Thematic Working Group successfully conducted fieldwork in Bhutan, India, and Pakistan, following strict guidelines and taking all the necessary precautions.

Modelling surface flow hazards
In collaboration with the University of Bristol, we organized a training on the use of flow modelling for hazard assessment in mountain environments.

Virtual and in-person training
Our training ‘Bringing meaning to statistical practice using R’, was conducted simultaneously using a hybrid modality in three member countries: Bhutan, Nepal, and Pakistan.
