MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF OF PARTY

We are pleased to share this first issue of the SERVIR-HKH newsletter. A joint initiative of USAID and NASA, and implemented by ICIMOD, SERVIR-HKH has been working on promoting applications of Earth observation and geospatial information technologies in key priority areas in the region. We are now implementing the third phase of SERVIR-HKH (2020–2025). Over the last decade, we have had the privilege of working with many national and global partners to address challenges in water resource management, food security, weather and climate, land use, and natural disasters. We have used the learning from these collaborations to develop innovative solutions and capacity building programmes that address the needs of our regional partners.

Here, we present some of our work over the last six months and highlight a few key activities. Through this newsletter, we hope to stay connected with our local and international network of partner institutions and individuals and keep everyone informed about our work. We look forward to your feedback and to exploring possibilities for collaboration to address issues of common interest in the Hindu Kush Himalaya.

Land cover of HKH region

Land cover of HKH region

Land cover change is a significant contributor to environmental change. The degradation of forests and conversion of natural areas, forests, and farmlands to other land use impact ecosystem services and biodiversity significantly. Using multiple methodologies and input data sources, national agencies in different countries of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region have conducted land cover mapping at various times.

The status and decadal change of glaciers in Afghanistan since 1990

The glaciers in Afghanistan were mapped using Landsat satellite images from 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2015. An object-based image analysis was used to delineate the boundaries of clean-ice and debris-covered glaciers, which were further validated against high-resolution satellite images from Google Earth. The glaciers equal to or larger than 0.02 sq. km were mapped with 97% accuracy.
