MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF OF PARTY

Welcome to yet another issue of the SERVIR-HKH newsletter! We wish you a happy and prosperous new year 2022 as we share some of our achievements in 2021. The past year continued to be a challenging experience, with very limited engagement with our partners and users. We continued our efforts mostly through the virtual platform, and we were able to organize the very popular training “Empowering Women in GIT” for five countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Pakistan.  As travel restrictions across the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region were slightly relaxed, our SERVIR-HKH team was able to resume field activities and a users’ meeting in Dhanusha, Nepal, along with several trainings, workshops, and meetings in Bangladesh.

Our key achievements include the launching of the book Earth Observation Science and Applications for Risk Reduction and Enhanced Resilience in Hindu Kush Himalaya Region: A Decade of Experience from SERVIR. Similarly, we launched the Regional Land Cover Monitoring System (RLCMS) for the HKH region and released annual land cover data from 2000 to 2018. The following articles provide details on these activities.

Happy reading and do let us know what you think of our work in 2021!

WORKING WITH SERVIR-HKH

At SERVIR-HKH, Sajana Maharjan, a Remote Sensing and Geo-information Analyst, is working on our Regional Land Cover Monitoring System (RLCMS) and estimating above ground forest carbon. Her daily work routine ranges from integrating data from spatial and non-spatial sources, performing image processing, spatial and temporal analysis, mapping and modelling, and serving as a resource person in our training events.
